Time Management with an eternal perspective

9/12/2008

Q? What do you struggle the most with time management?

Are you a busy bee?

Luke 10:38-42

38As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” 41“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

  1. Which characters (Martha or Mary) do you identify yourself with more?

  1. In your opinion, what should be your highest priority in God’s perspective?

Live with a sense of Purpose

Psalm 90:8-12

8 You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. 9All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. 10 The length of our days is seventy years— or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. 11Who knows the power of your anger? For your wrath is as great as the fear that is due you. 12 Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

  1. From these verses, what are some consequences of not managing our time in a manner that is glorifying to God? What did the Israelite struggle in using their time? (Numbers 32:13) Have you ever felt like this before?

Live with a sense of Priority

Ephesians 5:15-17
15Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

  1. What does it mean by “the days are evil”? Where do we see that in our life?

  1. How do we manage our time in a manner that glorifies God? What are some suggestions that Paul made?

  1. How does this differ from how you currently manage your time?

  1. What does living a life with an eternal perspective look like to you? Also read 1 Peter 4:7-8, Matthew 16:25-26, Hebrews 10:24-25, Matthew 5:39-42.

SUMMARY: Live like you were dying! Find out what God’s will is for you and be a faithful steward of living it out.

Application: What are some short term and long term steps to deal with your struggle in time management?
